Artist in Residence Program & Application Details for 2023
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Shelter Cove Arts and Recreation Foundation (SCARF) are pleased to announce the 2023 sessions of the King Range National Conservation Area (KRNCA) Artist in Residence (AiR) program. The residency will offer an inspirational and unique 4 weeks on California's remote Lost Coast for painters, photographers, printmakers, and graphic artists.
The AiR program is founded on the belief that artists look closely at the way the world works, notice things that others may have missed, challenge ideas, experiment, and create new opportunities to interpret natural resources through art. Artists see beauty and virtue in the public lands that are promised to future generations of Americans. The participants are encouraged to use their observational skills in portraying the variety of cultural and natural resources in the King Range, such as historic structures, artifacts, cultural landscapes, geologic features, and plant and animal life.
Projected Outcomes
- In this secluded location, the artist will experience uninterrupted time and space in the stimulating and rugged environment of the KRNCA to pursue their artistry, while being inspired by our Nation’s public lands.
- The selected artist will create artwork that promotes public appreciation of the landscape, raises awareness of and a deeper understanding of these unique and fragile environments, and inspires visitors to preserve these irreplaceable natural and cultural resources.
- This residency will provide an opportunity for learning and dialogue about the value of the National Conservation Lands and their connection to the local community.
- The artist will explore and immerse themselves in the BLM-managed landscape, and is encouraged to depict the expansive variety of cultural and natural resources of BLM lands including landscapes, local ecosystems, historic structures, and wildlife.
- The artist will share their work and artistry knowledge with community members by conducting two public presentations/workshops in Shelter Cove during residency (one for adults and another for youth).
Residency Details
Location
The KRNCA is a spectacular meeting of land and sea as mountains thrust straight out of the surf with King Peak (4,088 ft.) a short 3 miles from the ocean. The KRNCA encompasses 68,000 acres along 35 miles of California’s north coast. The landscape was too rugged for highway building, giving the remote region the title of California’s “Lost Coast”. It is the USA's first National Conservation Area, designated in 1970 and celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2020. Douglas fir-covered peaks attract hikers and hunters, while the coast beckons to surfers and anglers. World-class mountain bike trails, and 42,585 acres of coastal wilderness are two of the highlights of this incredibly unique area. The community of Shelter Cove sits at the southern end of the KRNCA and is home to approximately 900 full-time residents. The BLM King Range residency is in a remote location — the nearest town is 40 minutes to the east and the closest city is 1.5 hours north. Cell coverage is dependent on the carrier, but is generally unavailable and/or becomes spotty outside of Shelter Cove. The housing may have wireless internet and a telephone, dependent on location.
Sponsors
The AiR program in the KRNCA has come out of a unique partnership between the BLM and SCARF. It is the mission of the BLM to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations by managing public lands for a variety of uses. The Shelter Cove Arts and Recreation Foundation has a mission of improving the quality of life in the Shelter Cove by offering art and recreational experiences. Together they provide an opportunity for an artist to experience the Lost Coast while educating and showcasing their art skills in the local community.

The 2023 residencies will each run for a period of four weeks.
